Every little boy (or girl) loves a superhero … either pretending to be one, watching them on tv, or thinking their dad is one. I had my son Sawyer’s nursery decorated from pieces I had left over from our prior house. One day, as I was perusing Amazon (never good to leave me perusing unattended!), I found the cutest baby superhero prints. My design mind ran wild and next thing you know, I was designing the nursery! Aren’t the baby superhero prints adorable?
Sawyer’s room before
This is what Sawyer’s room looked like before I began my transformation. It’s pretty cute, but wasn’t designed specifically for him. I had Harper’s first room designed just for her and Mile’s nursery tailored for him, so I had to do something special for Sawyer too … even if he was already 7 months old!
Commence the baby boy superhero nursery with paint!
To begin the baby boy superhero nursery makeover, I would need to paint Sawyer’s bedroom. As you can see, it still had the ugly, hard to clean, flat as can be builder paint on the walls. Sherwin Williams is my go-to when I need paint, so I drove over there with my daughter, Harper, to grab some paint chips. She kept asking if I was ready to go. Over and over. Finally, when I was done, after 30 years of waiting, according to a four-year-old, I had my color scheme ready to go: Slate Violet for the upper walls with Secure Blue and Positive Red for the accent colors.
Determining Decor
Now I needed to determine the room décor and how to use the accent colors. As I was thinking about the décor, I ordered frames for my baby superhero prints. I then thought superhero capes would be adorable on the wall opposite the prints, so I ordered some of those.
I knew the changing table wouldn’t work for the new design, and I was running out of room for his clothes in it anyway, so I decided to use the Ikea dresser we had in our guest room. Speaking of, I still need to replace that dresser so our next guests will have something to put clothes in! Eeeek!
Getting a dresser upstairs ALL BY MYSELF!
Oh, and you should have seen me move this dresser from downstairs to upstairs all by myself. I’m sure it was a sight! I hauled up the drawers first, then put the dresser shell on it’s side to get it out of the guest room …. Once I got to the stairs, I put it on it’s top and pushed it up the stairs … Whew … finally, it was upstairs and in Sawyer’s room!
Decor, Decor, Decor …
Back to décor, I also found some wall decals on Amazon to add to the baby boy superhero nursery theme and spotted some 8” x 18” superhero prints. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the prints, but I knew I could make them into something….
So, of course my next stop would be to the Hobby Lobby. I wanted to check out the Woodpile collection to see if I could find a solution for those odd sized 8”x18” prints I had just ordered. As luck would have it, I found a frame looking wood piece. Can’t lie, I got a little excited!
While in Hobby Lobby I found another Superhero wall art piece and a large letter ‘S’ for Sawyer. I figured I could paint the ‘S’ in one of the accent colors I chose and put it above his crib area.
Waiting for my Amazon delivery …
Now I just had to wait for all my Amazon items to come in the mail…which, I also added some red curtains to the order to enhance the superhero them even more! In the meantime, I painted the walls Slate Violet. The room painted rather quickly, since half the walls are in board and batten. It really transformed the room and I was excited to get rid of the flat builder paint on the upper walls as well!
Painting with kids??
I should add, I also painted the room with my three kids around … as you can see, I kept Sawyer busy in his activity center with food and toys. It worked for most of the paint job!
Amazon came!
Finally, the Amazon shipment came and I had all I needed to continue with this room (ok, so being in the Atlanta area we get the packages in 1-2 days … which isn’t that long of a wait, but seems like an eternity when you are itching to do a project)!
Executing the baby boy superhero nursery vision!
I first painted the drawer fronts of the Ikea dresser in Secure Blue. It really made the dresser pop and was a super, simple alteration! I’ll detail more about it in an upcoming post!
Then, I transformed the plain 8”x18” prints into an awesome wall décor! First, I painted the wood frames I got from Hobby Lobby in Positive Red. After that dried, I knew I’d have to trim a bit off the prints to fit the frame so I grabbed an Exacto knife and trimmed a very slight amount off the 8” width of the print. Just enough so it would fit perfectly in place on the wood frame.
Mod Podge is amazing!
Once I had it the right size, I put Mod Podge on the wood frame and placed the print on top. Next, I applied the Mod Podge all over the edges and front of the print to make sure it was stuck on extremely well!
I did this for both red frames and prints and let it dry. It was evening and the kids were in bed, so I snuck downstairs and watched a little TV. After a couple hours I checked out the fruits of my labor and it turned out AWESOME! These would be perfect for Sawyer’s baby boy superhero nursery!
I decided these would look good next to the ‘S’ above Sawyer’s crib, so I painted the large letter in Secure Blue to bring some of the blue accent color to that side of the room.
Now that all the projects were done, it was time to put the room together! Hanging the baby superhero art prints was the most time consuming, but once I found my groove it went rather quickly.
Pro tip: Hanging multiple pictures evenly across a wall is simpler than it seems. Grab a level, a hammer and your nails. Hammer in your first nail. Determine how many inches away you need your next nail and use your level as a guide. The level keeps you straight and helps you place the nails evenly across the wall! |
Putting the room together!
After I got the baby superhero prints hung, I hung the capes. I used a command hook for those and did the same spacing trick with a level as I explained in my pro tip above. This got them evenly spaced and they looked so cool. My 2 year old son really wanted to play superheroes! The kids determined that Harper would be Black Panther, Miles Spiderman and Sawyer could be Hulk … maybe because he’s a baby and smashes everything?
I put the furniture where it needed to go, then hung the ‘S’ and red framed superhero prints on either side. The dresser went on the opposite wall and I hung my Hobby Lobby superhero piece and the wall decals above. I put everything else I had in it’s place (and decluttered) and this baby boy superhero nursery was done!
Baby boy superhero nursery is DONE!
I fell in love with this room and love rocking Sawyer in it every night. This room is versatile and can be for a little boy or even older. There are other superhero prints you could use instead of the baby superhero ones. You can check those out here.
Is there a little superhero in your life that you want to update their room? Or perhaps a toy room? Let me know in the comments below.
Be blessed!
