Looking for a simple way to design a boy’s sport themed room? It takes only a few simple elements to give your boy (or girl) a sports themed room! I’m a lifelong Denver Broncos fan, so I was excited when my 2-year-old son, Miles, decided he wanted a Broncos themed room. As you can see, our love for the Broncos runs deep! I even made my son, Sawyer’s, cranial helmet into a Broncos helmet!
Before we landed on a Broncos themed room, I gave Miles a few options. I showed him airplanes, color blocks and Spiderman as potential themes … but when he saw Broncos, he was SOLD! He got super excited and I had a theme to design on.
The before look
Miles room was a bit of a mix before I started this project. It was mixed with airplane and whatever. It wasn’t cohesive and he really needed a room to grow in. This room definitely needed an upgrade!
Designing the elements
As I was deciding the elements to go in this room, I knew I wanted gray walls, a stripe of some sort on at least one wall, dark blue and orange accents, football prints, actual footballs somewhere and of course, some Denver Broncos logos. I just had to figure out how to piece all that I wanted in his room together.
With the new room design, I also wanted to upgrade his toddler bed to a full-size bed. I looked around online and didn’t really see what I was looking for. So, I decided to look at Facebook Marketplace and I found an awesome bed … only problem was, it was white and wouldn’t quite look good with the gray dresser I already had in his room.
As a simple solution, I’d just paint the bed a dark blue! The blue would go with the gray dresser and fit PERFECTLY with the Broncos theme … plus, it was one of the accent colors I wanted. We got the bed for a steal and I started painting!
Painting the bed
I did my usual, rough sand the outside, primer and then 4-5 thin coats of Sherwin Williams Naval. I always use their surface paint for projects like this, as it holds up well.
After my 5 thin coats of Naval blue, I put on 3 good coats of clear coat for protection. A bed in a little boy’s room gets a lot of rough housing action, so it had to be protected.
Now painting the walls
For the wall color, I decided on Repose Gray from Sherwin Williams (I’m sure you noticed a theme … I always use Sherwin Williams paint … it’s my favorite!). We have this color in our basement and I’d used it before in my daughter’s room at our prior house, so I knew it would look good with his bed and dresser. I then also chose a darker gray color, called Pavestone, to do a stripe on his wall.
Next, I got to painting! It took two good coats of Repose Gray to cover the builder’s flat paint and boy, it sure changed the room! After the paint dried overnight, I got out my painter’s tape and did a strip that took a “turn”. I thought it’d look pretty cool without being “too much”. After I finished my darker gray coats for the stripe, I let it dry about 10 minutes and then promptly removed the painter’s tape … carefully. I always angle at about 45 degrees and slowly peel off painter’s tape. It came off nicely and I had a pretty crisp line. I used a tiny paintbrush to fix any bleed over on my line and it was done!
Choosing décor
As the usual, I perused Amazon to find some football themed prints for his wall. I wanted a set of four with our blue and orange colors. It didn’t take long till I found the perfect ones! It’s almost like they were made for this room. And bonus, Miles tells me about the football players in these prints every night. He loves their helmets and how they protect them from getting hurt! It’s adorable I tell you, adorable!
With the prints selected, I then chose blue frames for them…cause, why not blue? It’s a Broncos color, it’s cool and it’ll be so much better than gray, white or black. Am I right?
Broncos décor a must
I had a Broncos pennant in my room when I was a kid as a gift from my dad, so I found one on Amazon for him. Then I also found a round Broncos wood piece, some Broncos footballs and holders and a Broncos blanket. I chose all gray for his bedding with the Broncos blanket to accent with orange and blue checkered pattern. The design elements were coming together nicely!
Lastly, I needed something with his name on it so I created a “jersey looking” design with the Denver Broncos colors and put our last name on the back and number 10. Ten seemed like a good number since he was born on the 10th of July. I thought that would be a good number for him to start till he decides what number he is when/if he plays sports down the road.
Putting the pieces together
Now that the bed and room were painted, it was time to assemble the room. I put his bed in the middle of the wall you see when you come into the room, so naturally his end table went to the side he would be getting in and out of. Since his room was pretty small, I put his dresser inside his closet to save that space.
I placed his framed wall prints in the middle of the stripe and hung his football holders. Added the pennant and framed jersey to the wall behind his bed and placed the footballs. His large letter M was in natural wood color, so I went ahead and painted it the dark gray from his stripes. That brought some more of that color element to the room. Lastly, I placed his Broncos wood piece between his curtains and then made his bed.
This boy’s sport themed room came together nicely and he was ECSTATIC! I wonder if one day he’ll be playing flag football and dreaming of becoming a Denver Bronco! That would be cool!
Closing out
As you can see, it was a simple update to make this room into a sports room. You can easily do this with any sport or multiple sports. Choose your sport or team, select your colors (which could be derived from your team!) and find coordinating décor. It’s pretty fun, easy and big impact.
