I have a simple, weekend master bedroom transformation to show you this week! If you look at your master bedroom, are you happy with it? Is it calm and serene … a place of relaxation? There are so many simple ways (with a little elbow grease) that you can do to update your master bedroom!
Uncle Adrian’s birthday!
My brother-in-law, Adrian, had a birthday the first part of May. While he was going on a boy’s weekend, my sister, Sherena, had the idea to update their master bedroom. Their room was nice before … but a bit boring. They hadn’t done any decorating in the room since they bought the house new in July 2019. Between time and covid and life, they hadn’t gotten a chance to make their bedroom into the oasis that fits their lifestyle.
Boring, boring, boring …
The walls still had the flat builder paint. There was no décor on the walls. It had become a family room with all relax and play time happening in their room. The room was just…blah. A bed, a dresser, end tables and an office station in the nook. Nothing fancy, but nothing terrible either … the room just needed some love!
I really, really wish we had a before picture of the room….but I have a before they moved in picture. HAHA! Unfortunately, my sister TOTALLY forgot to grab a true before … but just imagine a bed with end tables and a dresser and not much else. Got the vision? Hope so!
Sherena’s transformation idea!
My sister is the one that started this transformation idea. She wanted a brick wallpaper accent wall with freshly painted adjacent walls. Plus, she thought it’d finally be a good time to add in some wall décor and maybe a plant. I agreed … these walls needed some LOVE!
My job was to put up the wallpaper (you all know my love for peel and stick wallpaper!) and to paint the walls. She’d gather décor and I’d help place it.
So, my brother-in-law left town and we were ready to begin this transformation! We first did our normal Saturday swimming lessons with the kids, let Sawyer take a quick nap and then my family and I headed over to my sister’s house to commence this simple, weekend master bedroom transformation!
Kid duty
With five kids between my sister and I, it meant one of use would be on kid duty and the other two adults on bedroom the bedroom transformation project. As a result, Sherena hung with the kiddos and my husband and I started in on the bedroom walls.
Commence project master bedroom transformation
First thing I did was paint the corner wall area where the wallpaper would meet the painted walls. I needed this corner to dry before I could start on the wallpaper.
Then I continued around the room with my paintbrush painting the trim. As I was painting the trim, Ben got to rolling the paint on the walls. Oh, and I can’t forget … the chosen wall color was Crushed Ice from Sherwin Williams. Can’t go wrong with this color. It’s a beautiful tone that will go with most any décor. Very calming and fresh!
Wallpaper is awesome!
I finished up the trim and was ready to start the wallpaper. I grabbed my tools and started. Instead of starting on the far left, due to the windows, I started to the right of the far-left window. I thought it would be easiest to begin with a full piece that didn’t need trimmed. Then I worked my way to the right wall and finished up to the left of the left window at the end.
This strategy worked out well, but if I had to do it again, I would just go ahead and start from the far left and work my way to the right. It just seems cleaner and easier. Trimming around the windows is a bit challenging, but I got it done and it turned out beautiful!
One thing to add about the wallpaper, is the quality. We tried the Threshold brand that we grabbed from Target. Compared to the peel and stick wallpaper I’ve hung before; this was a much thinner feel and easier to tear. I’d recommend NuWallpaper or RoomMates if you are looking for a better quality that won’t break the bank. These can all be found on Amazon.
Yeah, we need FOOD!
Now that the wallpaper was hung and the walls painted, it was time for some dinner. We were HANGRY! My husband, sister, myself and all the kiddos went to a local tex mex restaurant. I just enjoyed sitting since I’d been on my feet painting and wallpapering all day! HA!
After dinner, it was about time for our Sawyer to go to bed so Ben headed home with our three kids and I went back to my sisters to do some final touches on the wallpaper.
Finishing up …
While finishing up the last bits of wallpaper, my sister’s neighbor … who is totally awesome and selfless and helpful … came over to install the new ceiling fan for their bedroom. His name is Cody, but my niece was adamant his name is Tony. Still, do this day she is convinced his name is Tony .. regardless of what he tells her. It’s hilarious and kept us laughing.
Tony/Cody installed the ceiling fan and as a bonus, he also helped install curtain rods. I finished up the wallpaper and then headed home. The next day would be church first and then helping my sister finish up décor for the room!
Décor time!
After church and lunch and naps, we headed over to my sister’s house to complete this simple, weekend master bedroom transformation. I brought over my hammer, nails and drill and we went to work.
We hung a heart décor piece above the bed. The space was limited above the bed, so we didn’t want too much up there. Just something simple, but cute.
I had some lamps in my guest room that we used on each side of the bed. Then we hung some décor shelves and placed some décor on top. Sheer curtains, some additional wall décor and a green plant placed and we were almost done!
Adding a personal element
As an added personal touch, we had a canvas made from one of their wedding photos. We found the perfect spot for this on the wall and we were done! As we were doing a quick vacuum and cleaning up the tools, Adrian pulled into the driveway. We felt like that final few minutes on Trading Spaces of trying to complete a room so it would be ready for a reveal.
Time for the reveal!
We hid all the tools as fast as we could and hid! Sherena went down to greet her husband and drew him upstairs. He walked in the room and was shocked and amazed at the transformation!
Ben and I popped out of hiding and we all hugged and showed off the room. This simple, weekend master bedroom transformation was officially complete since we had done the big reveal!
Celebrating the transformation
With all the work finished and it being dinner time, we all went to celebrate at Taco Mac. It was a perfect end to the weekend of transformation!
